Chapter 15

Finn applied just enough pressure to Farrah’s neck and back to relax her muscles. It wasn’t too hard like some of the expensive massage therapists she’d gone to. It was one of the reasons she wasn’t keen on getting massages. But she could go for one of his any time.

“Oh my god you have no idea how good that feels,” Farrah moaned into her pillow.

“Better?” Finn asked, as he continued to stroke her skin.

“You are full of surprises. That’s not exactly what I expected when you said you could help me get rid of my headache.”

“Disappointed?”

“A little,” she smiled, turning her head to look at him. “But I’m glad the headache is gone. It was gearing up to be a bruiser.”

“Glad to be of service. Now, do you want to talk about what happened with your friend?” Finn said, removing his hands from her. He lay on the bed beside her fully clothed, leaned against the massive mahogany headboard, and pulled her against the wall of his chest.

Farrah recalled their first morning together, when she’d lain in this exact position and traced circles on his naked chest. Had that really been only five days ago?

“We’ll get to my so-called friend later. What I’m dying to know about right now is your living situation. You said you live in a van? Please tell me you’re pulling my leg?”

“I’m not.”

“But why? I don’t understand.”

Finn smiled. “I’m sure you don’t, given the station in life you were born to.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Farrah said.

“Don’t go giving yourself another headache,” Finn chided. “I live in my van because I can’t afford the rents in New York City. It’s not rocket science.”

“I’m guessing that kinda puts a damper on your dating life.”

“Not necessarily. I’ve had quite a few move-in offers.”

“I’m sure,” Farrah said. Hell, she was tempted to take him in. The thought of bedding him every night was like a junkie to their drug of choice. Highly addicting. Impossible to refuse. Farrah shook her head to dismiss the thought.

“And you don’t have a friend or relative or somebody you could stay with?”

“I don’t believe in laying my head in places I can’t afford to pay for.”

“Pride goeth before the fall,” Farrah said.

“Nothing to do with pride. It’s just the way I was raised. My father always said, ‘If you can’t afford it, you don’t need it.’ It’s a life rule that’s served me well.”

“Everybody needs shelter,” Farrah countered.

“I have shelter.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I do. But I disagree. Let me put it to you another way; a way you might understand better.”

“I’m all ears,” Farrah said.

Finn stuck a finger in her ear. “All the wax out. Ready to hear?”

Farrah giggled and pushed his hand away.

“You’re so silly.”

The light rumble of laughter in his chest echoed in her ear. He buried his hand in her hair, absently massaging her scalp.

Farrah closed her eyes as she listened to him.

“Living the way I do has allowed me to be free. I’m not chained to a job I hate wishing that someday I’d get to pursue what I love.
